The termite swarming season in Pennsylvania will typically begin in March at the start of warm weather and rainfall.
The swarming season will generally last through the spring season and conclude in early June before the start of summer.
Additionally, swarming activity often resumes just before fall, and lasts from September through October.
TERMITE SWARMERS
Termite “swarmers” are groups of winged adult male and female reproductive termites that leave the nest for the purpose of establishing a new colony.
TERMITE SWARMERS VERSUS FLYING ANTS
These swarmers or flying termites are often mistaken for flying ants. Winged termites are distinguished by the differences between their wings and body shape. While termites have four wings of about equal length and nearly twice their body length, flying ants have wings only slightly longer than their body, with their back wings much shorter in length than their front wings. Finally, winged termites do not have narrow waists and abdomens like flying ants do.
DETECTING TERMITE SWARMERS
Detecting winged termites outside of a home or office indicates that a nearby stump or some other other structure was chosen as a viable place to begin colonization. However, after exhausting the available food supply, termite swarmers can enter inside through cracks in floors and around doors and windows. While termite swarmers can be a genuine nuisance, they can be easily collected with the use of a vacuum cleaner and disposed of.
Termite swarmers do not cause damage. Nevertheless, spotting termite swarmers or that of their shed wings indoors or outside around the porch or foundation is a strong indication that the structure is infested with termites.
TERMITE DAMAGE
Termites cause over $5 billion in damage each year. Unfortunately, the most destructive type of termite of all–the subterranean termite–happens to the main type of termite found throughout our area. What’s more, damage caused by termites is not covered by the standard home insurance policy.
TERMITE INSPECTION
When was your last termite inspection?
Known as the silent destroyers, may live and thrive within a structure for many years before swarmers are spotted or considerable damage to walls, floor coverings, insulation, expansion joints, and various wood products is visually detected.
That’s why industry experts agree that one of the best ways to protect your home or business against termites is to have the structure receive a full termite inspection at least every two to three years.
Having a home or business professionally inspected by a certified technician is the best way to help detect the presence of termites and prevent extensive damage.

• Seal openings around the structure such as plumbing and service lines • Remove landscaping mulch • Remove dead trees, stumps, and roots near the structure • Ensure wooden siding is at least six inches above the ground • Repair leaks in basement • Inspect lumber and firewood for termite activity • Keep firewood, lumber, or piles of paper from foundation or crawl space
