Termite Swarming Season

TERMITE SWARMING SEASON

Posted by Admin

TERMITE SWARMING

The termite swarming season in Pennsylvania typically begins in March with the onset of warm weather and rainfall. The season generally lasts through spring and ends in early June before summer. Additionally, swarming activity often resumes just before fall and lasts from September through October.

TERMITE SWARMERS

Termite “swarmers” are groups of winged adult male and female reproductive termites that leave the nest to establish a new colony.

TERMITE SWARMERS VERSUS FLYING ANTS

These swarmers, or flying termites, are often mistaken for flying ants. Winged termites can be distinguished by the differences in their wings and body shape. Termites have four wings of nearly equal length, about twice their body length, while flying ants have wings slightly longer than their body with back wings much shorter than their front wings. Furthermore, winged termites do not have the narrow waists and abdomens that flying ants do.

DETECTING TERMITE SWARMERS

Detecting winged termites outside of a home or office suggests that a nearby stump or structure is being considered for colonization. Once the available food supply is exhausted, termite swarmers can enter through cracks in floors, doors, or windows. Though they can be a nuisance, they can be easily vacuumed and disposed of. Termite swarmers do not cause damage but spotting them, or their shed wings indoors or around the porch or foundation, is a strong sign of an infestation.

TERMITE DAMAGE

Termites cause over $5 billion in damage annually. The most destructive type, the subterranean termite, is the primary species found in this area. Termite damage is not covered by standard home insurance policies.

TERMITE INSPECTION

When was your last termite inspection? Known as "silent destroyers," termites may thrive inside a structure for years before swarmers are noticed or considerable damage is detected. Experts recommend having a full termite inspection every two to three years to prevent extensive damage. A professional inspection by a certified technician is the best way to detect termites and protect your property.

HOW TO PREVENT TERMITES

In addition to scheduling annual inspections, homeowners can take these proactive measures to prevent termite infestations:

  • Seal openings around the structure such as plumbing and service lines
  • Remove landscaping mulch
  • Remove dead trees, stumps, and roots near the structure
  • Ensure wooden siding is at least six inches above the ground
  • Repair leaks in the basement
  • Inspect lumber and firewood for termite activity
  • Keep firewood, lumber, or piles of paper away from the foundation or crawl space
